Wixom, Oakland County

A city that started with a car plant

Wixom became a village in 1957 when Ford announced its assembly plant on South Wixom Road, and a city the next year. The plant built cars until 2007 and was torn down starting in 2012. The city sits about 13 miles from our Brighton base. The town itself is much older. It was Sibley's Corners in 1831 and took the Wixom name after a railroad junction came through in 1883.

Today a move here can mean three different things: a condo or townhome near downtown, a single-family home on a newer street, or a house near Loon Lake Road and Twin Sun Lake. Each one has its own stairs, parking, and carry distance. An in-person estimate is the easiest way to sort that out before you pick a crew size and a truck.

Tribute condos, newer townhomes, and homes near the lakes

The big housing story downtown is Tribute. It sits on about 90 acres across from city hall, between Pontiac Trail and Maple Road, east of Wixom Road. It was planned for around 600 condos, townhomes, and houses. Building stopped in 2008 and picked back up in 2014, so one neighborhood holds condos from the mid-2000s next to much newer homes.

The original Tribute condos came in several styles. Some are brownstone-style units of about 2,000 square feet, which means multiple levels and a lot of stairs. Others are stacked ranch condos starting around 1,200 square feet, which usually means a shared entry and a walk to your door. If you own a piano or a large sectional, tell us early. We can pad a stairwell, add a third mover, and bring floor runners for a long hallway.

North of downtown, Loon Lake Road is where the lake neighborhoods start. Some homes near Twin Sun Lake carry a Walled Lake mailing address, so check which city your address actually falls in before you set up trash service or enroll a student.

From downtown to Twin Sun Lake

A few neighborhoods you will hear, and what each one means on move day.

Downtown Wixom

Centered on Pontiac Trail, with two-story storefronts and new housing a short walk away. Street space is limited, so a smaller truck plan is often the best fit.

Tribute at Wixom

Condos built in phases starting in the mid-2000s, including Heritage at Tribute off North Wixom Road near Beck. Expect shared entries, stairs, and an association that may want move-in times set ahead.

Liberty at Tribute

Two- and three-bedroom townhomes of up to about 1,500 square feet, close to downtown. Townhomes are usually multi-level, so we plan for stairs and a tight turn at the landing.

Encore Village

Ranch and colonial homes of roughly 1,700 to 2,400 square feet, off Wixom Road north of Pontiac Trail. The two-story colonials add bedroom stairs to the plan.

Highgate on the Lake

Off Loon Lake Road, with beach access on Twin Sun Lake and a neighborhood park. Some homes here are newly built, and lots can be deeper than in the subdivisions downtown, so the carry to the door may be longer.

What changes a Wixom move

Leftover boxes and bulk items

The city contracts Priority Waste for trash, recycling, and yard waste. Their Wixom page lists bulk pickup that you order through a form, so line that up before move day and not after. Yard waste runs spring through early December, and details change each year, so confirm with the city.

Snow and street parking

The city bars parking on streets after a snowfall or drifting of 2 inches or more, until the street is plowed. For a winter move, we would aim for the driveway or a cleared lot and keep the date flexible when the forecast turns. Confirm the current rule with the city.

Condo and townhome move-in rules

Tribute condos and townhomes share hallways and entries. Ask your association about reserved move times, where a truck can stop, and any insurance paperwork. We protect doorframes and floors with jamb protection and floor runners, which matters most in a shared hallway.

New builds can slip

Homes are still going up in Wixom, including in the lake area. Closing and occupancy dates move. If yours does, we can work with a last-minute date, and short-term storage can cover the gap between homes.

Wixom Moving FAQs

The city contracts Priority Waste for trash, recycling, and yard waste. Check their Wixom page to see how to order a cart or report a problem. Confirm anything about service with the city.

Not after 2 inches or more of snow or drifting, until the street is plowed. If snow is in the forecast, plan to use a driveway or move the date. Check the city for the current rule.

The Wixom area is served by Walled Lake Consolidated Schools. Near Loon Lake Road and Twin Sun Lake, some homes carry a Walled Lake mailing address, so confirm with the district before you enroll anyone. Their enrollment page lists the steps.

Often, yes. Associations commonly set move-in hours and want to know where the truck will stop. Ask yours before you book, then we can match the crew and truck to what the building allows.
