A courthouse clock tower, a few lakes, and a Howell address that may not be in the city
Grand River Avenue runs straight through downtown Howell, past the block-wide courthouse square and its clock tower, finished in 1889. Most of the storefronts around it date to the 1870s, rebuilt quickly after fires in 1887 and 1892. That is the old core. Past it, Howell spreads into lake neighborhoods and newer subdivisions, and a lot of them are not inside the city limits at all.
That matters for your move. A Howell mailing address can sit in the city, in Oceola Township, in Marion Township, or in Genoa Township, and each one handles trash, permits, and snow differently. Our Brighton base is only about 10 miles away, so coming out for an in-person estimate is easy, and it is the quickest way to sort out which rules and which kind of home you are dealing with before you pick a date.

1870s storefronts, 1990s lake colonials, and half-acre site condos
Downtown, the buildings are mostly one and two story commercial structures from 1865 on, with the bulk from the 1870s. A building that age has whatever doors and stairs it had then. If you are moving into or out of a space on or just off Grand River, tell us about every step and turn between the street and your door. A narrow staircase may call for padding the walls, and a piano or safe on those stairs needs extra hands.
Out on Thompson Lake, Lakeshore Pointe is a good example of the newer lake neighborhoods. Homes there are mostly 1990s colonials and similar styles, many with finished walkout basements. A walkout basement can hold half a household, so we plan crew time for the lower level, and we bring floor runners for the long path from garage to basement.
South of the city in Marion Township, Turtle Creek of Marion is a site condo neighborhood of larger colonial and brick homes built from the early 2000s on, on lots around half an acre. Those homes tend to come with unfinished walkout basements and big garages, which means more to pack. Full packing and packing supplies delivery are worth pricing for a house that size.
In the city, and just outside it
Some of these are in the city, and some only have a Howell mailing address.
Downtown Howell Historic District
About 60 mostly commercial buildings around Grand River Avenue and the courthouse square, roughly between Clinton, Barnard, Sibley, and Chestnut streets. Old entries and stairs, and street activity on event weekends.
Thompson Lake
The city's biggest lake, with about four miles of shoreline. Most homes on the shore are single-family, and many have docks or lake frontage, so plan for a walk from the driveway to the water side of the house.
Lakeshore Pointe
A Thompson Lake neighborhood in Oceola Township with a Howell mailing address. Homes are mostly 1990s builds on lots around a third of an acre, with walkout basements and shared beaches and docks.
Turtle Creek of Marion
A Marion Township site condo community with colonial and brick homes from the 2000s and later. Lots run around half an acre, with walkout basements and large attached garages.
Sunrise Park on Lake Chemung
A Genoa Township lake neighborhood with older ranch homes, some from the 1940s. The homeowners association maintains the roads and snow removal, and the neighborhood has its own private boat launch and boat storage.
Local rules that change a Howell move
Tuesday is trash and bulk day in the city
City of Howell service day is Tuesday, and you can set out one bulky item per week for free by 6 AM. Carpet has to be rolled in 4-foot sections, mattresses wrapped in plastic, and construction debris is not accepted. After a move, that limit adds up fast, so flatten your boxes for the recycling cart and plan on more than one week for big furniture. Townships have their own rules.
Balloonfest and other downtown weekends
The Michigan Challenge Balloonfest takes over Howell High School in late June, and it draws tens of thousands of people. The Melon Festival has closed the whole stretch of Grand River downtown. There is also a Sunday farmers market from May through October, and the Fantasy of Lights Parade on the Friday after Thanksgiving. If your move is downtown, pick a weekday or confirm event dates with the city first.
Snow emergencies and sidewalks
When Howell declares a snow emergency, on-street parking is off limits and cars can be towed. Sidewalks in the city must be cleared within 24 hours of a snowfall. If you are leaving a house in winter, tell the buyer or landlord about both rules. Confirm current details with City Hall.
Which municipality are you in?
City water and sewer sign-up happens at City Hall, but only for city addresses. Lake neighborhoods in Oceola, Marion, and Genoa townships go through their own offices and homeowner associations. Sort this out before move day so your utilities and trash start when you do.

Howell Moving FAQs
Not always. Lakeshore Pointe is in Oceola Township, Turtle Creek of Marion is in Marion Township, and Sunrise Park is in Genoa Township, but all of them can carry a Howell mailing address. Check your tax bill or call City Hall. It decides your trash day, utilities, and permits.
In the city, you get one free bulky item per week, set out by 6 AM Tuesday. Carpet must be rolled in 4-foot sections and mattresses wrapped in plastic. Construction debris is not accepted. Flatten boxes and use your recycling cart.
They can if you are downtown. Balloonfest is based at Howell High School in late June and draws huge crowds. The Melon Festival has closed Grand River through downtown. Check the city events page and schedule your move for a different weekend.
During a declared snow emergency, on-street parking is not allowed and vehicles can be towed. Move days in winter go better when you watch the forecast. Ask City Hall about current rules and plan to reschedule if an emergency is declared.
Mention walkout basements, docks, boat storage, shared access points, and any HOA rules on move day. Long carries from the driveway to the lower level or lake side take more crew time, and we would build that into your quote.
