Westland, Wayne County

A township that grew up fast, then became a city in 1966

Westland was Nankin Township until residents voted to incorporate in 1966, a year after Westland Center opened. By 1960 the township already had about 70,000 people, and most of it was built in one big postwar push. That is why so many Westland homes share the same bones: small footprints, a handful of floor plans, and garages set apart from the house.

The details that shape your move change a lot from one subdivision to the next, from a 1940s wartime duplex with a narrow upstairs to a brick ranch with a garage at the back of the lot. We would look at your stairs, your carries, and your street in person before we put a number on it.

Wartime duplexes, brick ranches, and newer subdivisions

Norwayne is the oldest and most unusual housing in the city. It was built starting in 1942 to house workers at the Willow Run bomber plant and other defense employers. You will find one-story rowhouses, two-story duplexes of roughly 860 to 1,080 square feet per side, and small single-family houses of about 830 square feet. Bedrooms in the duplexes are upstairs, and the rooms are small. A big sectional or a tall dresser may need to come apart, and we would pad the staircase and doorframes before anything goes up or down.

The streets in Norwayne curve and end in half-circle courts, so a full-size truck is not always the right plan. We would talk through a smaller truck or a shuttle setup when we quote the job.

Annapolis Park, built between 1953 and 1957, is a good picture of the next wave. These are mostly one-story brick ranches on lots about 50 to 60 feet wide, and most have a detached garage at the back. Single-level living means shorter carries inside. The garage means workbenches, shelving, and tools often travel the whole length of the yard, which adds crew time we would build into the schedule. Newer subdivisions north of Ford Road, such as Marlee Woods, have larger floor plans and more rooms to pack.

Norwayne, Annapolis Park, and newer subdivisions

Each of these changes how a move is planned.

Norwayne

A National Register district of 1940s rowhouses, duplexes, and small houses between Palmer, Wildwood, Merriman, and Glenwood. Tight rooms, upstairs bedrooms, and curving streets with courts mean careful furniture planning.

Annapolis Park

Brick ranches from the 1950s along Julius, Matthew, Hanover, Farnum, Alan, and Paul. Sidewalks, grass strips with mature maples, and rear garages. Expect long yard carries from the garage.

Carillon Village

Small to mid-sized brick ranches between Cherry Hill Road and S John Hix Road. Mostly single-level, so inside carries are short.

Marlee Woods

A newer single-family subdivision north of Ford Road with floor plans from about 1,400 to 2,750 square feet. Bigger homes mean more boxes and more crew hours.

What to line up before move day

Bulk pickup has a small limit

The city picks up bulk items every other week on your recycling day. The limit is two bulk items or eight extra bags, not both, and mattresses go out wrapped in plastic. If you are clearing out a garage or basement, spread it across several pickups or plan for a separate haul. Check the city's calendar for your dates.

Snow emergencies clear the streets

Westland can declare a snow emergency once 6 inches of snow has fallen. Cars must come off city streets for plowing or they can be ticketed or towed. If your move lands in winter, we would plan around where your vehicles and our truck can sit, and you should confirm any street rules with the city.

Set up city water early

The city handles water billing, including e-bills and autopay. Autopay can take up to two billing cycles to start, so call Water Billing about a new account or final bill before you hand over keys.

Plan for the garage in the back

In ranch neighborhoods, the detached rear garage is often where the heavy items live. If you have a gun safe, a freezer, or a workbench out there, tell us early so we can schedule extra hands and runners for the yard.

Westland Moving FAQs

Yes, furniture and mattresses are accepted, but the limit is two bulk items or eight extra bags per pickup, and it runs every other week on your recycling day. Mattresses need to be wrapped in plastic. Check the city's calendar and confirm the rules with the city before you set anything out.

Cars have to be off city streets during a declared snow emergency, or they can be ticketed or towed. Westland can declare one at 6 inches of snow. If your date is close, tell us your parking situation and confirm any street rules with the city.

The bedrooms are upstairs and the rooms are small, so measure big pieces before you commit. We can pad the stairs and take beds or tall furniture apart when needed. If a piano or large cabinet is involved, mention it at the estimate.

Westland's Water Billing Department handles new accounts and final bills, and the city's page covers e-bills and autopay. Autopay can take up to two billing cycles to begin, so ask early.
