A county seat where I-94 and US-127 cross
Jackson sits where I-94 and US-127 meet, and the two highways share the same road for about four miles. M-50, M-60 and M-106 also run through town. That makes it easy to get in and out, whether you are heading to Ann Arbor, Lansing, or south toward Ohio.
The moves here are very different from each other. An 1890s house west of downtown has narrow stairs and old porches. A 1960s ranch near Ella Sharp Park is usually an easy walk-in. A lake house at Vandercook Lake may have a steep drive or a long carry from the road. That is why we like to walk through your place in person before giving you a price.
Victorian blocks, postwar ranches, and lake cottages
West of downtown, the Under the Oaks historic district is full of homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the bigger houses were later split into apartments, so you may find shared hallways, back stairs, and second-floor units with tight turns. For a piano or a big dresser, we would check the stair width and landing first and pad every corner of the climb.
South of downtown, around Ella Sharp Park, a lot of the housing went up between 1940 and 1969, with some older homes mixed in. Expect small to mid-size single-family houses, plus a few apartment complexes. Basements and steep basement stairs are common in houses of that age, so plan for extra crew time if your washer, workbench, or freezer lives down there.
Near downtown, the old state prison site has been turned into loft apartments, and other older buildings have been converted too. Lofts often mean one shared elevator or stairwell. If you live in one, book your elevator or loading time with your building before move day.
From Under the Oaks to the Irish Hills
The city, the township next door, and the lakes each move differently.
Under the Oaks
A historic district just west of downtown, bounded roughly by South West Avenue, West Morrell Street and First Street. Large Victorian, Colonial and Tudor Revival homes, many divided into apartments. Expect narrow stairs, porches, and street parking.
Downtown Jackson
Older commercial buildings and lofts with shared entries. Public street parking is not allowed from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., so a truck cannot sit overnight at the curb. Loading is best planned within the daytime hours.
Ella Sharp Park area
Mostly mid-century single-family homes on 4th Street and the streets around the park, which was opened in 1916. Many have basements, so the stairs down are usually the main thing to plan for.
Summit Township
The suburb just south of the city line, along the Grand River. Homes sit on a mix of subdivision lots and larger parcels, and the city's snow and leaf rules do not apply there. Check with the township.
Vandercook Lake
An unincorporated lake community in eastern Summit Township, with US-127 along its eastern edge. Mostly single-family homes and some mobile homes, built from the 1940s on. Lake lots can mean sloped yards and longer carries from the truck.
Irish Hills lakes
Southeast of Jackson, rolling hills and a chain of small lakes run along US-12 near Brooklyn, Napoleon and Onsted. Lake homes can have winding drives, steps down to the water, and seasonal access, so tell us about the driveway.
What to plan for on move day in Jackson
Downtown parking
Public downtown streets have a 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. parking ban, and on-street parking is limited to two free hours a day. City lots and decks open to the public in the evening. Ask the city's parking office about loading before you book a downtown move.
Snow emergencies
When the city declares a snow emergency, parking on city streets is banned and cars can be impounded. Vehicles on snow routes must go within 6 hours, and the rest within 24. If your move lands on a snow day, we will talk about rescheduling or loading from a driveway.
Fall leaf collection
The city runs loose leaf pickup from curb piles each fall, and crews ask residents to clear vehicles from the street. A parked truck or POD at the curb can block that, so check the schedule for your section.
Getting rid of extras
The city has held a free Fall Cleanup Day with dumpsters for residents to drop off bulk items. If you are downsizing, ask the city when the next one is before you pay to haul things away.

Vandercook Lake is in Summit Township, outside the city limits. City snow emergency, leaf pickup and parking rules are for city streets, so check with the township for what applies where you live.
Exterior changes such as new doors, porch work, or windows need approval from the city's Historic District Commission before permits. Ask before you plan to widen an entry for large furniture.
Inside the city, water and sewer are billed through the city's Utility Billing office, not a private company. Contact them before move day so the account is in your name.
