Flint has Victorian homes, 1919 bungalows, and a brick main street
Flint was a carriage town first and a car town second, and the housing still shows it. Within a few miles you can go from carriage-era Victorians near the river, to rows of worker bungalows built almost all at once in 1919, to apartments inside old downtown buildings. Each one moves differently.
That mix is why a phone quote only goes so far. A narrow Victorian staircase, a bungalow with a steep basement stair, and a downtown walk-up with a metered street out front are three different jobs. Seeing the stairs, the carry, and the parking in person is how we price the day.

Carriage-era Victorians on one side of the river, GM bungalows on the other
Carriage Town and the Grand Traverse district sit on opposite sides of the Flint River, just west of downtown. Both have well-kept Victorian homes from the years when Flint built horse-drawn carriages. Carriage Town was a walk-to-work neighborhood for carriage workers and managers, so these are century-old houses, and older stairs and doorways are likely. A piano or a large sofa on an old staircase takes planning, and we can pad the stairwell and send extra hands for it.
Civic Park, north of downtown, is a different story. General Motors had about 950 homes built there between spring 1919 and January 1920, mostly from 28 house designs. They are one-and-a-half and two-story bungalows in brick, stucco, or wood, on lots that are generally 50 by 100 feet. That means smaller rooms and, in the one-and-a-half story plans, bedrooms tucked upstairs. Upstairs bedrooms mean more trips, so we would schedule extra crew time for them.
Downtown, older buildings have been turned into apartments, including a hotel from 1919. Ask your building about elevator reservations and loading rules, and we will bring floor runners for a long hallway carry.
Flint neighborhoods that move differently
Flint is a city of distinct neighborhoods, each built in its own decade. Here are six, from the river to Dort Highway.
Carriage Town
The historic district runs from the Flint River north to Fifth Avenue, between Begole Street and North Saginaw Street. Victorian houses built for the carriage trade, with older staircases. Atwood Stadium is on its west edge, so check the event schedule before booking a game-day move.
Grand Traverse district
On the south side of the river, with Victorian homes from the same carriage era. Older houses mean older doorways, so measure big furniture ahead of time.
University Avenue corridor
Part of Carriage Town, with the city's largest cluster of fraternity houses. If you are moving out of a shared house, tell us how many floors we are carrying from.
Civic Park
About 950 bungalows from 1919 and 1920 on 50 by 100 foot lots. Smaller rooms, and upstairs bedrooms in the one-and-a-half story plans. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
Downtown Flint
Centered on Saginaw Street south of the river. Older buildings with apartments, some in a converted 1919 hotel. Saginaw Street parking is metered, so plan where the truck will sit.
East Village and College Cultural
East of downtown, between I-475 and Dort Highway. Mott Community College and the Flint Cultural Center are here, and the College Cultural area sits off Court Street east of Crapo Street. Check for school or event traffic on your day.
Things to check before the truck arrives
Snow emergencies mean no street parking
When the city declares a snow emergency, it asks residents to keep vehicles off public streets so crews can plow. Cars left on the street can be ticketed and removed at the owner's expense. A moving truck is a vehicle. Alert Flint, the city's text and email system, is how the city says it will announce one. For a winter move, keep a backup date and sign up for the alerts.
Parking downtown on Saginaw Street
Saginaw Street spaces are metered with a four-hour maximum, and you pay at the pay station on the block. The downtown authority runs the system, and rules and rates can change, so confirm on its parking page before move day. The street was relaid in brick in 2024, about 750,000 bricks between Court Street and the river, so ask your building where a truck can load.
Bulk items and boxes after the move
Flint's trash contractor takes up to 3 bulk items and 20 bags per week with no special request, on your regular pickup day. Your day is on the contractor's collection map, and holidays can push it back a day. Confirm limits with the contractor if you are clearing out a whole house.
Carts and recycling
Each household gets a 96-gallon gray cart for trash and a 64-gallon blue cart for recycling. Trash goes in bags before it goes in the gray cart, while recycling goes loose in the blue one. Extra bagged trash can sit next to the cart. Breaking down moving boxes into the blue cart is the easiest cleanup.

Flint Moving FAQs
Saginaw Street spaces are metered with a four-hour maximum, paid at the pay station on your block. Enforcement hours and rates are set by the Downtown Development Authority and can change, so check its parking page. If your building has its own loading area, ask about that first.
The city asks everyone to keep vehicles off the street, and cars left there can be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense. If a storm is in the forecast, call us and we will find a new date. Alert Flint is how the city announces emergencies.
Often it will, but not always. Century-old staircases can be narrow or turn tightly. Measure the stairwell and the piece, and tell us about any turns or low ceilings. We pad the walls and can take a piece apart or bring extra hands if needed.
The trash contractor's limit is up to 3 bulk items and 20 bags per week, with no special request. Anything beyond that is a separate matter, so check with the contractor before you stack up a pile.
They are one-and-a-half and two-story bungalows with smaller rooms, and many have bedrooms upstairs. That means more trips up and down, not necessarily a bigger truck. We would plan extra crew time for the stairs.
