A Detroit move depends on which Detroit you are in
A 1900s mansion off Seminole Street, a 22-story tower in Lafayette Park, and a Victorian rowhouse in Corktown have almost nothing in common on move day. The stairs, the parking, and the building rules all change from block to block.
Many Detroit moves have a local detail that is hard to judge from a phone call, like a third-floor ballroom, a co-op that controls its elevators, or a street with posted permit hours. That is why we offer a free in-person estimate. We walk the stairs and the hallways first, then give you a price you can count on.

Mansions, rowhouses, and mid-century towers
Most of the grand historic neighborhoods went up between 1895 and the late 1920s. Indian Village has Georgian, Tudor, and Colonial Revival homes with carved woodwork, third-floor ballrooms, and servants' quarters. A few even have original elevators. Boston-Edison has more than 900 homes across 36 blocks, mostly built between 1905 and 1925, from big estates on wide lots to two-story houses on 40-foot lots. Palmer Woods is mostly Tudor Revival, laid out on curving avenues instead of a grid. For a piano or an antique cabinet going up to a third floor, we would plan extra crew time and pad the staircase before anything moves.
Corktown is the oldest part of the city. It has Federal-style rowhouses from the 1840s and Victorian townhouses added later. Rowhouses are narrow, and stairs are often steep and tight. Furniture that fits through the front door on a dolly may still need to be turned or carried by hand on the way up.
Lafayette Park is a different case. It is a mid-century complex designed by Mies van der Rohe, with 22-story towers and low townhouses raised above grade and served by central parking lots. Many of these buildings are cooperatives, not rentals or condos. Midtown and the Cass area add apartment buildings from the early 1900s and former factories turned into lofts.
Detroit neighborhoods and what they mean on move day
Each of these neighborhoods packs a different kind of carry.
Indian Village
Three streets, Seminole, Iroquois, and Burns, between East Jefferson and Mack. Large homes from 1895 to the late 1920s with multiple floors, carriage houses, and in some cases a third-floor ballroom. Expect long staircases and heavy furniture.
Boston-Edison
North of New Center, between Woodward and Linwood. Wide boulevards and brick, stone, and stucco homes from 1905 to 1925, with a mix of estates and narrower 40-foot lots. Leaded glass and slate roofs mean door frames and floors are worth protecting.
Palmer Woods
A 188-acre subdivision from 1915, mostly Tudor Revival, on curving avenues with few through streets. Lots vary in shape, so the distance from the curb to the front door can change house to house.
Corktown
Federal-style rowhouses from the 1840s and Victorian townhouses along Michigan Avenue, which still has its historic brick pavers. Narrow stairs and small entries are common.
Lafayette Park
Mies van der Rohe towers of 22 stories, plus raised townhouses with shared parking lots. Many buildings are co-ops, so ask yours how elevator time and truck parking are handled.
Brush Park
Victorian mansions from the 1850s to the 1880s, with newer condos in the south end. The neighborhood has posted residential parking zones, so check the signs on your block.
Midtown and Cass Corridor
Early 1900s apartment buildings and former factories converted to lofts, all within reach of Woodward. Freight elevators and loading rules vary by building.
Four Detroit details to settle before the truck arrives
Building elevators and loading dock rules
In a co-op tower, a loft, or an older apartment building, ask the building office whether you must reserve the freight elevator, whether there is a loading dock, and whether they want proof of insurance. We are licensed and insured in Michigan, and we can work inside the window your building gives you.
Residential parking zones
Detroit has permit-parking zones in Cass Park, Selden, and Brush Park, with restrictions that often start after 5 p.m. and run seven days a week. Posted signs set the hours. Call the Municipal Parking Department before move day to ask how a moving truck fits your block, and confirm the rules with them.
The QLine on Woodward
The streetcar runs 3.3 miles in the street between Congress Street and Grand Boulevard, and vehicles blocking its tracks can be towed. If you live on or near Woodward, we would pick the loading spot with that in mind.
Curbside pickup after the move
Bulk items go out by 7 a.m. on your collection day, up to about two cubic yards. The city also offers free drop-off yards for Detroit residents with ID. Confirm your pickup day with the city.

Detroit Moving FAQs
It depends on the block. Some areas, like Cass Park, Selden, and Brush Park, have posted permit hours that often begin after 5 p.m. Rules vary by block, so call the Municipal Parking Department and ask about your address before you book a date.
Yes. Piano moves are one of our services, and homes there are known for tall staircases and third-floor spaces. We would look at the stairs in person, pad the staircase, and schedule extra crew time.
Ask your building office. Large buildings often reserve the freight elevator or limit move hours. Book your elevator time first, then pick your move date around it.
Detroit's bulk pickup takes up to about two cubic yards and under 1,000 pounds, set out by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Appliance doors must be removed. You can also use a city drop-off yard with ID. Check the DPW guidelines for current rules.
The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department takes applications online or by mail. Homeowners need ID and a deed or transfer paperwork, and tenants need ID and a lease. Apply before move day and confirm the current list of documents on the city page.
