From 1910s Foursquares to apartments near the Capitol
Lansing has been the state capital since 1847, and the Capitol downtown was finished in 1878. The Grand River runs through town, and the neighborhoods around it were built in very different decades. Moving out of a 1910s Westside Foursquare is not the same job as moving into a downtown apartment or a south side house that joined the city in the 1950s.
We plan Lansing moves around the building, not the zip code. Stair turns, long carries from the curb and where the truck can sit decide how many movers and how much time your move needs. That is why we like to walk through the place in person before we quote it.

What the houses here mean on move day
The Westside was swampland, then farmland, until the Espanore and Westmoreland subdivisions were platted in 1916. A home ownership campaign in 1919 pushed people to buy there. The result is blocks of American Foursquares with four rooms on each floor, Arts and Crafts windows and exposed rafters, Dutch Colonials with gambrel roofs, and English Cottages with side entrances. Gambrel and cottage roofs often mean slanted ceilings upstairs, so a tall dresser or a bed frame may have to go up and down in pieces. A tight staircase is where a piano move needs a plan, and we can pad the stairwell and bring floor runners for hardwood.
Moores Park is older still in places. Park Place was developed from 1890, and a building boom around 1916 came with the growth of the nearby REO plant. Streets such as Barnes, Beal and Moores River Drive carry a mix of those early houses. Houses from this era commonly have narrow doorways and steep basement stairs, so we would want to see the basement before quoting if you are storing things down there.
Near the Capitol and in Old Town, the buildings are commercial ones. Old Town's storefronts on Grand River Avenue and Turner Street are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in Late Victorian and vernacular styles. Moving into an upper floor there, or into any downtown apartment building, comes down to stairs, elevators and loading space. Ask your building about elevator reservations and where movers can load.
From the Westside to REO Town
What is in each one, and what it means for the truck and the crew.
Westside
Platted in 1916 along streets like Genesee Drive, Carey and Larch. Foursquares, Dutch Colonials and cottages, many with side entrances and sloped upstairs ceilings.
Moores Park
Park Place sits between Washington Avenue, Mount Hope, Beal Avenue and Moores River Drive. Houses date from the 1890s to the 1910s, so expect older stairs and basements.
Old Town
North of downtown around Grand River Avenue and Turner Street. Old brick commercial buildings, many with upper floors reached by stairs. Loading often happens at the street.
REO Town
South of downtown along South Washington Avenue, where Ransom Olds built REO cars starting around 1905. A storefront and arts strip with homes around it, so loading is often at the curb.
Colonial Village
South side, between Mount Hope, Martin Luther King Boulevard, Holmes Road and Pleasant Grove. Mostly single-family homes. The oldest corner joined the city in 1917 and the rest in the 1950s, so house age varies block to block.
Downtown near the Capitol
Mostly state government buildings, with apartments mixed in. Moves here are about elevators, hallways and a truck that may not fit at the front door.
Things worth knowing before you book
Overnight parking and snow
The city council lifted Lansing's old ban on parking on the street from 2 to 5 a.m. in 2020. Snow is a different story. The city asks people to keep cars off the street so plows can get through, and it publishes a snow ordinance and a plow map. If your move falls on a snow day, tell us early so we can plan for a longer carry.
Downtown curb space
Downtown on-street spots use pay stations and a parking app. Call the city's parking office about where a moving truck can legally sit before move day, and we will work around it with a smaller truck plan if space is tight.
Late August near MSU
East Lansing is next door, and Michigan State moves students into its halls over several days at the end of August. MSU does not allow U-Hauls or trailers at the halls, and the area is busy with student moves that week. If your lease or closing lands then, book early.
Lights, water and leftovers
The Lansing Board of Water and Light supplies electric and water, and new customers start service with an online move-in request. Furniture you are not taking can go to the city's bulk item pickup, which covers things that will not fit in your cart with the lid closed.

Lansing Moving FAQs
The council lifted the 2 to 5 a.m. street parking ban in 2020, so overnight parking is generally allowed. Snow plowing is the exception, and the city asks people to keep cars off the street then. Confirm the current rule with the city, and read its snow ordinance page before a winter move.
The Board of Water and Light provides both electric and water, so one utility handles both. New customers use the move-in request on its website. Do it before move day so service is on when we arrive.
It can. East Lansing fills with students over a few days, and MSU keeps U-Hauls and trailers away from its halls. It is a busy week for moving, so reserve your date early and avoid the first move-in days if you have flexibility.
The city has a bulk item collection for things that will not fit in your cart with the lid closed. Look at its page for how to schedule it. Do not just leave items at the curb the morning of your move.
Yes, we move pianos. Many of those 1910s and 1920s houses have a stair turn or narrow doorway, so a piano move gets planned around the staircase. That is one reason we do in-person estimates.
