A river town, a lakefront, and a lot of old buildings
Monroe sits on the River Raisin, a few miles inland from Lake Erie. The Old Village was platted in 1817, and the city still has blocks of houses from the 1800s next to newer homes on the edges. A Monroe move can mean a Greek Revival house on Elm Avenue, an apartment above a Monroe Street storefront, or a lake cottage out toward Woodland Beach.
Narrow old staircases, long carries from a street spot, and lakefront streets all change how many movers you need and what truck we send. That is why we do in-person estimates. We would rather see the stairs than guess at them.

Old stairs, row buildings, and lake houses
The Old Village is the oldest part of town. Along Monroe Street, many buildings have shops on the ground floor and apartments and offices on the second and third floors. That usually means a stair carry, often a steep one, with no elevator. Furniture that fits in the door may not turn the corner on the landing. We would measure the stairwell first and pad the walls and railings before the first piece goes down.
East Elm and North Macomb is a National Register historic district between the River Raisin and Lorain Street. It has Federal, Greek Revival, Second Empire and Victorian houses, plus later bungalows. The big early homes along Elm Avenue date to the 1830s and 1840s. Expect narrow doorways, steep back stairs, and floors that deserve floor runners. If you own a piano, a safe, or an antique dresser, tell us up front so we can plan the crew and the carry.
Out toward Lake Erie, the housing changes again. Woodland Beach and the communities around it are lakefront neighborhoods in Frenchtown Township, with a mix of year-round homes and smaller houses close to the water. Monroe is low ground, and the lake has pushed water into shoreline streets in high-water years. If you are moving in or out near the water, check the weather and your street before you pick a date.
In town and along the lake
Downtown stairs and lakefront streets are two different jobs. Here is how each place moves.
Old Village
The downtown core, laid out on a grid in 1817. Apartments sit above ground-floor shops on Monroe and Front Streets, so expect stairs and tight landings. Ask about loading space on the street before move day.
East Elm and North Macomb
A historic district of houses from the 1830s through the 1920s, from large Elm Avenue homes to smaller early-1900s houses on the side streets. Older doorways and stairs are the main issue. Good place to protect floors and trim.
Woodland Beach
A lakefront community in Frenchtown Township, about four miles northeast of downtown Monroe. It includes smaller lake areas such as Erie Shores, Grand Beach and Indian Trails. Water is close, so we would check access and weather for the day.
Detroit Beach
Right next to Woodland Beach on the same stretch of Lake Erie shoreline. Lake homes tend to have limited yard and driveway room, so a smaller truck plan can make loading easier.
Stony Point
A shoreline community about seven miles northeast of downtown Monroe, on the lake side of Frenchtown Township. It is farther out than the city proper, so plan longer crew time for the trip and the carry.
Things that matter on move day in Monroe
City or Frenchtown Township
Woodland Beach, Detroit Beach and Stony Point are in Frenchtown Township, not the City of Monroe. The city's bulk pickup and water office below are for city addresses, so call the township if you live along the lake.
Downtown parking
If your move is on Monroe Street or Front Street, call the city Treasurer's Office about truck parking before you book.
Bulk pickup after the move
Monroe's bulky item pickup is on Fridays, two items per property per week, and you have to call by noon Thursday. Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic and taped shut. If you are clearing out a house, sort what goes on the curb early so you do not get stuck with a pile.
Water start and stop
The city water office asks for a final read when you move out, and someone has to be there to verify service. Rentals need landlord approval. Set this up as soon as your date is firm so it does not hold up closing or move-in day.

Monroe Moving FAQs
Yes. Those buildings often have steep stairs and no elevator, so we look at the stairwell and landing first. We can pad railings and walls and schedule extra crew for the carry. We'd come see the stairs in person before we quote it.
Call the city Treasurer's Office before move day and ask about truck parking on your block. Its number is on the city's parking page.
The city offers bulky item pickup on Fridays for residential properties, up to two items a week. You call by noon Thursday. Mattresses have to be wrapped in plastic and taped shut. Confirm current details on the city trash page.
Lakefront streets in this area have flooded in high-water years, so we watch the weather and your street the week of the move. If access looks bad we would rather shift the date than carry through standing water. Tell us early if your street floods.
Yes. Those houses often have narrow doorways and steep stairs, so we plan the crew size and route before the day. Tell us what you have when you book so we bring the right equipment.
