Whitmore Lake, Washtenaw County

One lake, two townships, two counties

Whitmore Lake is not a city. It is an unincorporated community split between Northfield Township in Washtenaw County and Green Oak Township in Livingston County. Your address decides which township office handles your permits, which county handles your recycling, and in some cases which school district you register with. Sort that out early, because it changes who you call after the truck is unloaded.

We are roughly 7 miles from our Brighton base. The lake is about 667 acres, US-23 runs along the west side, and M-36 ends at the highway here. A lake lot can look simple on a map and still hide a long walk from the driveway to the door. Walk us through the carry from driveway to door at the estimate, and we will price what is really there.

Lake lots that started as summer cottages

Whitmore Lake was a summer lake long before it was a year-round address. A state survey counted about 230 cottages around the shoreline in 1940, along with a hotel, two resorts, and eight boat liveries. Many of those lots are now permanent homes. Some are still small, older structures with tight stairs, low doorways, and not much room to turn around outside.

That matters on move day. For a cottage-style home, we would plan a smaller truck, add crew time for long carries, and pad stairwells and door frames before anything big goes through. If something heavy has to go down a tight cottage staircase, tell us about every step and turn between the room and the driveway.

Not every home here is old. Lower-density subdivisions sit away from the lake roads, and the closer you get to downtown, the closer together the houses sit. Each of those is a different kind of move.

Where people say they live around here

Whitmore Lake is a patchwork of lake roads, subdivisions, and a small downtown. Here is what each part means for a move.

Downtown Whitmore Lake

Houses near Main Street sit closer together and closer to the road than out on the lake roads, and many have front porches. Porches mean steps at the door, and tight lots leave little room to stage a truck.

Whitmore Lake, Northfield Township side

The south end of the lake falls in Washtenaw County. Older lakefront lots here began as cottages, so check the path from the driveway to the door.

North Shore and the Green Oak side

The north half of the lake is in Livingston County. The state boat launch is on North Shore Road. Tell us if your street runs near it, since we will want to see how a truck can get close.

West shore neighborhoods

These homes sit between the lake and US-23, roughly 200 houses plus two mobile home parks on the Green Oak side. The main way in is from the south off the Eight Mile Road interchange. If you are moving into a mobile home park, ask the park office about move-in rules before you book.

Horseshoe Lake

This smaller lake south of Whitmore Lake is part of the same lake-area village pattern, with higher-density homes and sewer service near downtown. Closer lots mean shorter staging space, so we would plan around where the truck can sit.

The Links of Whitmore Lake

This is a lower-density subdivision in Northfield Township, outside the sewer service that reaches the lake area. Ask the seller whether the house uses a well and septic, and expect longer driveways than at the lake.

Setting up after the move

Two townships, two sets of rules

Northfield Township's office is on Main Street in Whitmore Lake. Green Oak Township's office is in Brighton, and its building department handles permits separately for electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work. Call the one that matches your address before you start a remodel or hire a roll-off dumpster.

Trash is private service

Northfield Township does not provide trash service. You choose a private hauler, and the township lists a few to call. On the Green Oak side, call the township to find out which haulers serve your road.

Sewer or septic

Northfield runs its own wastewater treatment plant and bills sewer quarterly. Green Oak points residents to septic guidance in its homeowner packet. Ask the seller or landlord which one your house uses.

Getting rid of the old stuff

Washtenaw County holds clean-up days for bulky items, appliances, electronics, and tires, with sign-up rules set by the county. Decide what stays before the crew arrives. Fewer items means a shorter move, and old appliances and electronics are easier to drop at a clean-up day than to sort out afterward.

Whitmore Lake Moving FAQs

Both. The community is split between Northfield Township in Washtenaw County and Green Oak Township in Livingston County. Check your tax or deed paperwork to see which township your address is in, then use that township's office for permits and questions.

Northfield Township does not run trash service, so you hire a private hauler. For a Green Oak address, call the township to ask which haulers serve your road. Confirm service before move day so the boxes have somewhere to go.

Maybe, maybe not. Some lake lots began as cottages, and access can be tight. We would look at the driveway and the walk to the door at your in-person estimate, then plan a smaller truck or extra crew time if the carry is long.

Washtenaw County parts of Whitmore Lake are in Whitmore Lake Public Schools. The Livingston County side is split between Whitmore Lake, South Lyon, and Brighton districts, so check your address with the district before you register.

Washtenaw County runs clean-up days for bulky items, appliances, and electronics. Check the county page for dates, locations, and sign-up rules, since those change each year. Livingston County residents can start with the Recycle Livingston link in Green Oak's homeowner packet.
