Learn moreSouthgate, Wayne County
A 1950s Downriver city built on small brick homes and short lots
Southgate sits on the south end of Wayne County, with I-75 along its northwest corner and Fort Street (M-85) forming most of the eastern edge. It only became a city in 1958. Most of what you see was built in the decade or two before that, when farmland was platted into streets of modest houses.
That age matters on move day. Older homes mean narrower doors, steep or tight stairs, and basements that carry a lot of the storage. And the city has one rule that catches movers off guard: no street parking on trash days. Book an in-person estimate before you settle on a crew size, since stair turns and driveway length are hard to judge from photos.

Cape Cods, bungalows, and brick ranches from the 1940s and 1950s
The oldest streets are on the east side. Old Homestead was platted in 1923, stayed mostly farmland for about twenty years, and filled in with homes from the 1940s and 1950s. Expect one-and-a-half-story Cape Cods and bungalows, plus some one-story ranches and two-story colonials. Many of these have a bedroom or two under the roof, reached by a steep, narrow stair. A sofa, mattress, or dresser that looks fine on the porch may not turn that corner. We can pad the stairwell and plan extra time for pieces that need to be tilted or taken apart, and a piano is worth flagging early.
Basements are common in homes of this age. If you are clearing one out, tell us about workbenches, chest freezers, and shelving units, because those are the items that tend to surprise a quote. Lots here are modest, and many driveways are short or run alongside the house. That can mean a longer carry from the truck than you picture, so we would schedule crew time for it.
Not everything is a house. The 13-story office tower on Trenton Road, built in 1973, has been converted to apartments. If you are moving into or out of a building like that, ask management about elevator reservations and loading rules. We bring floor runners and door jamb protection for long hallways and shared elevators.
East of Dix-Toledo, west of it, and the newer edges
Southgate has few formally named neighborhoods, so it helps to think in halves. The east side is older, the west side is newer, and each one moves differently.
Old Homestead
The city's oldest residential area, on the east side between Superior Street, Eureka Road, and Fort Street. Homes are mostly 1940s and 1950s Cape Cods, bungalows, and ranches. Expect steep upstairs staircases and basements.
East of Dix-Toledo, north of Eureka
The oldest subdivisions are in this part of the city, laid out as a street grid. Lots run roughly a tenth to two tenths of an acre, so driveways are short and the truck is often parked on the street.
West half of the city
Newer subdivisions with curved streets and cul-de-sacs instead of a grid. A cul-de-sac can limit where a large truck sits, so a smaller truck plan may fit better.
Goddard Road and Dix-Toledo near Allen and Pennsylvania
Newer single-family and apartment development has gone in near I-75 on Goddard Road and along Dix-Toledo by Leroy, Allen, and Pennsylvania roads. Newer buildings often have their own move-in rules, so ask management.
Southgate rules that affect move day
No parking on trash days
The city bans parking from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on refuse pickup days. A moving truck counts as a parked vehicle. Look up your pickup day, and book your move on a different weekday if you can. Confirm the current rule with the city.
Carts, not bags
Trash goes in the city's carts, and loose bags are not collected. Carts can go out no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before and must come in by 8 a.m. the day after. Unpacking day will fill a cart fast, so break down boxes before pickup.
Bulk items and yard waste
Bulk items follow the same curb timing as carts. Yard waste pickup runs from the first full week of April to the first full week of December, in paper bags or cans with a yellow compost sticker. Leaves cannot be raked or blown into the street.
Paint and chemicals before you pack
A moving crew cannot take paint, pesticides, or automotive fluids. Wayne County residents can use the county's household hazardous waste program. Appliances are not accepted, so plan for those separately.

Southgate Moving FAQs
The city bans parking from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on refuse pickup days. Pick a move date that avoids your trash day, and confirm the current rule on the city's trash page.
Many homes there are Cape Cods and bungalows from the 1940s and 1950s, where upstairs bedrooms sit under the roof. Measure the stair turn and doorways before you buy or move large pieces. At your estimate we can check them in person.
Loose bags are not collected, so use your cart for trash. Bulk items can go to the curb no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before pickup. Check the city page for what counts as bulk.
Wayne County takes household hazardous waste from county residents, through free collection events or a voucher program. Appliances are not accepted. Supplies and dates change, so check the county page.
Ask management about elevator reservations, loading areas, and move-in hours. The tower is a 1973 office building turned apartments, so each building's rules can differ from a standard complex.
