Sterling Heights was farmland until the plants came
In the mid-1950s, Chrysler and Ford moved onto farmland in what was then Sterling Township. Other factories followed up Van Dyke and Mound Road, and subdivisions went in fast to house the workers. The city did not exist until 1968. That is why a move here can start in a house from the township days and end in a brand new condo, all inside the same city limits.
A move here usually hinges on a few local details: how much stuff you can put at the curb, where a truck can sit, and what the building or street allows. We would look at your stairs, driveway and garage in person before we put a number on it.

From township farmhouses to 55-plus condos
The oldest buildings in town are farmhouses from before the subdivisions. The William Upton House on Utica Road, near Dodge Park Road, is an Italianate brick home from the 1860s. Smaller farmhouses still sit on large lots along Clinton River Road. Homes like these often have narrow back stairs and old doorways. Tell us about them early, because we may pad a tight staircase or bring floor runners for hardwood.
Most of the city grew up after the plants arrived, in numbered subdivision sections platted before and after 1968. Newer neighborhoods look different. Verandas is a large master-planned 55-plus community built around the Maple Lane golf course, with detached homes, townhomes, condos and apartments in one place. If you are downsizing into a place like that, ask the association about move-in rules and elevator use before you pick a date.
Bigger single-family homes often mean basements and long carries. If you have a piano, a gun safe or a pool table downstairs, we want to hear about it up front so we can schedule enough crew time. Note that the city's bulk pickup will not take a pool table, so plan where an old one goes.
From Dresden Village to the Clinton River
These are a few named areas and what they mean on move day. If your address is somewhere else in Sterling Heights, the same questions apply.
Dresden Village
A township-era subdivision, built in numbered sections, and the first neighborhood association in what became Sterling Heights. Homes from that era can have smaller garages and driveways, so we may send a smaller truck plan or stage the load in pieces.
Verandas
A 55-plus master-planned community around the Maple Lane golf course, mixing detached homes, townhomes, condos and apartments. Ask about elevator reservations, loading areas and move-in hours for your specific building.
Wanda Park
An older cottage-style community near the Clinton River. Older cottages tend to have narrower doorways and tighter rooms, and big furniture may need to come apart for the trip out.
Clinton River Road
Older farmhouses with large lots, some with outbuildings or converted barns. Long walks from the driveway to the door add crew time, and we would plan for that.
Dodge Park and Utica Road
The oldest part of the city. The Upton House stands here, and the Clinton River and a trail system run through the nearby parks. Expect older homes and mixed lot sizes.
Local rules that change how you clean out and settle in
Bulk pickup has a five-item limit
Curbside bulk pickup runs on your regular trash day, up to five items a week, with bundles no longer than four feet and fifty pounds. Move-outs are not covered. For a big cleanout, the city says to order a special pickup from Priority Waste or rent a dumpster. Pool tables, hot tubs, filled boxes and trash bags are not accepted as bulk.
Carts go out late and come in early
Trash and yard waste can go to the curb after 1 p.m. the day before collection and must be out by 7 a.m. on pickup day. Keep the lid opening facing the street and carts out of the road. Confirm your pickup day on the city's refuse page before you pile up boxes.
Snow emergencies clear the streets
When heavy snow blocks subdivision streets, the city can declare a snow emergency and every vehicle has to come off city streets. Cars left out can be ticketed and towed. In winter, plan truck and crew parking around that, and remember sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after a storm.
Water billing at the old and new address
Sterling Heights runs its own water billing. If you are selling, the city's FAQ explains how the meter reading and final bill work at closing. Confirm your move date with the water billing office, and set up WaterSmart at the new place.

Sterling Heights Moving FAQs
Sometimes. Curbside bulk pickup takes furniture, mattresses and appliances on your trash day, but only five items a week, and the city says move-outs are not covered. For a bigger cleanout, ask Priority Waste about a special pickup or rent a dumpster. Check the city's bulk page before you set anything out.
Flattened large cardboard in bundles can count as bulk items. Filled boxes and loose trash bags are not accepted as bulk. Confirm your pickup day on the refuse page, and remember carts can go out after 1 p.m. the day before.
All vehicles must be off city streets, which includes a moving truck. The city posts snow emergencies through its website and text alerts. If one is possible, tell us so we can plan driveway parking or reschedule.
Sterling Heights bills water itself. Call the water billing office near your closing or move date to arrange the final reading, then set up WaterSmart at your new address. See the city's water billing page for the current steps.
Many buildings set move-in hours, require elevator reservations or want proof of insurance. Ask your community manager first. When you request an estimate, tell us the building and unit so we can plan for that.
