South Lyon, Oakland County

A small city, a big township, and one zip code

South Lyon is a city of about 3.5 square miles in the southwest corner of Oakland County, about 8 miles down the road from our Brighton base. Around it sits Lyon Township, and a lot of the newer neighborhoods with a South Lyon mailing address are actually in the township. Others are over the line in Green Oak Township. That matters on move day, because the trash hauler, the water bill, and the city rules can be different depending on which side of the line you live on.

Your street might be a downtown block near the old depot or a cul-de-sac in a Pulte subdivision with a clubhouse down the road. Both are common here, and they move very differently. At an in-person estimate we walk your stairs, measure your driveway, and set a crew size that fits the real house.

Old downtown blocks, newer subdivisions, and lake lots

South Lyon started in 1832 as Thompson's Corners, became a village in 1873, and became a city in 1930. It grew around railroads, and downtown still centers on Lake Street and Lafayette Street. If your house sits near downtown and is older, plan for the usual older-house problems: narrow stairways, tight turns, and small doorways. A piano or a big sectional may need extra pads and an extra set of hands.

The newer homes are mostly outside the city limits. In Lyon Township you will find subdivisions like Pinehurst, built by Pulte on 278 acres off Martindale Road, with homes of roughly 2,600 to 3,150 square feet. Those are big houses with multiple floors, so a full load can take longer than people expect. If you are packing a four-bedroom home, we can schedule extra crew time and bring packing help for the kitchen and garage.

Then there are the lake neighborhoods and condo communities. Nichwagh Lake Estates sits in Green Oak Township on large country lots. Mill River and Oakmonte Estates at Mill River are built around a clubhouse, pool, and trails. A condo with shared hallways calls for floor runners and door jamb protection, and we will ask the association about move-in rules.

City blocks, township subdivisions, and lake lots

Here are a few places around South Lyon, and what each one means for a move.

Downtown South Lyon

About twelve walkable blocks around Lake and Lafayette. Older buildings and apartments above shops mean stairs and shared entrances. Ask the DDA before booking a truck on a festival or parade weekend.

Mill River

Condos and homes in Lyon Township near New Hudson. Most of the condos were built in the 2000s and 2010s. Expect shared hallways and an association that may want a certificate of insurance.

Oakmonte Estates at Mill River

Off Milford Road, north of 11 Mile. Many lots back to woods or private ponds, so the driveways can be long. We would plan extra time for long carries from the truck.

Pinehurst

A large Pulte community off Martindale Road, between 10 and 11 Mile. Quiet cul-de-sacs fit a box truck well, but the homes are big and have high ceilings and multiple floors.

Orchards of Lyon

A 249-lot Pulte community near I-96 and US-23, planned in the 2010s. Newer homes mean wide stairs and attached garages, so the loading is usually straightforward.

Nichwagh Lake Estates

Large country lots with lake access, in Green Oak Township. Lots are spread out, so the carry from the driveway to the door can be long.

Local rules that touch a South Lyon move

Trash day depends on which side of Ten Mile you are on

In the city, Priority Waste picks up north of Ten Mile Road on Monday and south of it on Tuesday. Put everything out before 6:00 am. Packing leftovers, boxes, and broken-down cartons add up fast, so plan for a few pickups. Large items go to the curb on your regular day. A fridge or freezer needs its doors removed and the refrigerant taken out first. In the township, you hire your own hauler.

Leave the recycling bin where it is

The recycling bin in the city belongs to the city, not the homeowner. When you move out, leave it for the next resident. Moving in without one? City Hall at 335 S. Warren has smaller bins. Starting trash service in the city goes through the Water Department.

Snow emergencies and sidewalks

The city declares a snow emergency when snow or ice reaches 4 inches or more, and winter parking is banned during one. If you are scheduling a winter move, we would watch the forecast with you and hold a backup date. City sidewalks have to be cleared within 24 hours after a snowfall, so stack boxes in the driveway or garage, not on the walk.

Fall leaf piles at the curb

From about October 1 to December 1, the city's DPW vacuums loose leaves piled in the street next to the curb. If you move in the fall, we would park the truck clear of the piles. Confirm the current dates with the city, since they depend on the weather.

South Lyon Moving FAQs

Not necessarily. The city runs its own pickup north and south of Ten Mile Road. Lyon Township does not provide trash service, so township residents hire a private hauler. Check the township's trash page before you move.

Large items can go to the curb on your regular trash day. The doors must come off, and the refrigerant has to be removed first. An HVAC company can handle that. Confirm the details with the city's DPW page.

Winter parking is not allowed during a snow emergency, which the city declares at 4 inches of snow or ice. If the forecast looks bad, talk to us about moving the date. Check the city's DPW page for the current rules.

No. The bin belongs to the city, so leave it for the next occupant. If you are the new occupant and there is no bin, City Hall has smaller ones.

The city vacuums leaves from the street next to the curb until about December 1, weather permitting. Keep the curb clear of anything else, and park the truck in the driveway if you can. The dates change each year, so check the DPW page.
