A river city with two sides and a lot of tall old houses
Saginaw sits on both banks of the Saginaw River, and a move here often means crossing it. The west side grew up around old Saginaw City. The east side grew up around East Saginaw. The two were joined in 1889, and I-675 now ties them together through downtown over the Henry G. Marsh Bridge.
Saginaw is about 60 miles from our Brighton base, so a move here is a planned trip, not a quick hop. We want to see the home first. Many Saginaw houses date from the lumber boom, and a three-story Victorian with a narrow staircase plans very differently from a ranch in Saginaw Township. A free in-person estimate is how we match the crew and truck to the house you actually have.

Lumber money built tall houses with tight stairs
Saginaw's lumber boom peaked in the early 1870s, and much of the city's older housing went up between the 1870s and the 1890s. On the West Side, most homes in the historic residential district were built between 1870 and 1890. You will find Italianate, Queen Anne, and Georgian Revival houses, and some are three full stories. Expect steep, narrow staircases, tight turns, and porches with several steps up from the street.
That shapes the plan. We pad stairwells and banisters, take beds and tall furniture apart before they go down, and schedule extra crew time for long carries. A piano or a heavy dresser on an old staircase is a job for a trained crew, so tell us about it up front.
Closer to downtown, the Cathedral District has mansard roofs, turrets, and Queen Anne homes from the same boom, with some 1920s bungalows mixed in. Older homes this size often have basement storage and attic rooms full of things nobody has touched in years. Packing help and extra boxes are worth planning for before the truck arrives.
Places people say they live in Saginaw
Here are a few areas and what they mean on move day.
West Side Historic Residential District
About 350 buildings, nearly all houses, running roughly from Mason to Madison and Harrison to Lyon streets. Most date from 1870 to 1890. Plan for multi-story homes, steep interior stairs, and front steps.
Old Town and Old Saginaw City
The riverside business district is mostly three- and four-story brick buildings from the 1800s, many with upstairs rooms. Ask about stair-only access, and about where a truck can pull up on a commercial block.
Cathedral District (Central City)
A forty-block neighborhood of Victorian houses, with most built from the 1870s to the 1890s and nearly all done by 1920. Expect big rooms, turrets, and stairs with sharp turns. Bungalows are mixed in.
Saginaw Township
A separate municipality next to the city, with Saginaw mailing addresses. Trash and bulk rules are the township's own, so check before you set anything at the curb. Newer subdivisions usually mean attached garages and easier carries.
University Center and SVSU
Saginaw Valley State University is in University Center. Residence halls and University Village townhouses have set check-in windows, unloading lots, and a bring-your-own-cart rule, so a move there is mostly about timing.
What to line up before move day
Start water at City Hall
City of Saginaw water and sewer service is set up with the water billing office at City Hall, with photo ID or by application. Confirm what the office needs for your address, and do it before the truck arrives so you are not without water on day one.
Know your trash rules
City recycling runs every other week, and cardboard should be flattened to no more than three feet by three feet. Furniture and building materials can go to the city's Convenience Station on the second Saturday of the month, with a Michigan ID. Saginaw Township does not allow move-out set-outs with regular trash.
Yard season matters
City yard waste and brush have set seasons that run roughly April through early December. If you are moving out of a house with a yard, clear it before the season ends or plan to haul it yourself.
Dorms and campus move-in
SVSU move-in is a weekend in late August with check-in times assigned by room. Students unload at a designated lot, then move the vehicle. Book labor-only help early if you want to avoid the busiest days.

Saginaw Moving FAQs
It can. The township is its own municipality with Saginaw mailing addresses. Each sets its own trash and yard waste rules, and the township says move-out set-outs are not allowed. Check your address on the city or township page before you plan a cleanout.
City residents can use the Convenience Station behind Public Works on the second Saturday of each month, with a Michigan ID. It takes furniture and building materials, but not paint or chemicals. Call the Mid-Michigan Waste Authority about curbside bulk pickup.
Yes. We pad the stairwell, protect door frames and floors, take large furniture apart where needed, and add crew time for long carries. Tell us about pianos, tall armoires, or low ceilings so we can plan before move day.
Contact the city's water billing office at City Hall. Bring photo ID, and ask what deposit or paperwork your address needs. A water application is available on the city's water billing page. Do it before move day.
Yes, for labor-only help or a full move. Housing assigns check-in times by room and asks students to unload in marked lots, then park in a residential lot. Check with SVSU Housing for your date and unloading location.
